Next-Level Music Camp is designed for older students who want to dive into new and fun musical topics. Each day, campers will head to a different breakout session covering topics like collaborative music-making, sight-reading, composition, and more, with hands-on activities and projects throughout. Students will have the opportunity to work with a variety of Allegro teachers, gaining new perspectives and learning from multiple teaching styles. Whether students are interested in performing, composing, or simply becoming more confident musicians, this camp will meet them where they are and push them forward! See below for more specific descriptions on each breakout session.

The camp will take place on August 3-6. Students ages 11-18 of any instrument are welcome!

Music Lab
In the Music Lab portion of this camp, students will learn how to compose and arrange their own music through fun listening exercises and composition activities with Elizabeth Killmon. Students will creatively apply their music theory knowledge to handwritten and audio-recorded composition and songwriting projects. Over the course of the camp, students will also collaborate on writing and recording a theme song for the camp!

Requirements: Students must have at least one year of music lesson experience. Students should bring blank music staff paper and pencils, and a laptop with MuseScore 4 downloaded (optional).

Collaborative Duo

The Collaborative Duo session is open to piano, instrumental, and vocal students who want to learn to collaborate on their instrument. Each student will be paired in an instrument-piano or vocal-piano duo to learn a collaborative piece based on their current playing level. Each day will focus on practical skills including score study, alignment & phrasing together, and rehearsal techniques. This will be an interactive session - Rebecca Edmiston will guide the students through the rehearsal process and provide opportunities for peer feedback.
Requirements: Please submit a recent video which demonstrates the student’s playing/singing ability. Videos can be emailed to kellan@allegromusic.school. If applicable, share a summary of the student’s previous collaborative experience (not required). If students want to sign up as a duo, please indicate that in the application.

Music Theory & Sight-Reading

Ever wonder how some musicians can sit down with a brand-new piece of music and play perfectly on the first try? It’s not magic—it’s pattern recognition. In this hands-on workshop, you will gain practical tools to help you analyze patterns in music so that you can 1) see the “big picture” in the music you’re learning, 2) learn new music faster by recognizing familiar patterns, and 3) go beyond “right notes” to playing with more style and musicality. In each session, we’ll briefly cover a core music theory concept— such as common key signatures, intervals, rhythmic patterns, or chord progressions— followed by interactive group games and ensemble activities. On the final day, the workshop will culminate in a Sight-Reading Challenge (complete with prizes)!
Requirements: Piano students who have completed ABC book 1 or equivalent.
