Visual Arts

Allegro is excited to offer premium small group art lessons for students ages 6-16!

Enrolling your child in art lessons reaps many benefits, such as building their confidence, honing their problem-solving skills, encouraging neural connections, and fostering social and emotional development in a small group setting.  Learning the fundamentals of art-making allows children to discover their own vernacular for self-expression. Well-informed, creative artistic expression partnered with a child's imagination empowers them to transcend the challenges and perceived limitations of their reality and envision the possibility of who they may become.

Art teacher Michael Dunaway has over 15 years of experience in arts education, and he is excited to partner with Allegro to inspire more students through the visual arts. Having experienced the transformational role of art in his own life, he is passionate about championing others in the same way.

Each class will be one hour long and allow students to explore a wide variety of topics catered specifically for each age group, with plenty of one-on-one attention from the teacher.

During the summer, students are encouraged to take multiple consecutive classes to cultivate the versatility of their artistic abilities. This will not only give them the most cohesive learning experience as they build connections between weekly topics, but also give them the foundation to move forward into more complex projects.

Summer lessons will be held at New Covenant Schools on Fleetwood Drive.

Art lessons will be weekly during the school year. There will be multiple "performance" opportunities for students to display their art at each Allegro recital.

All high-quality art supplies are included!

Small Group Lesson Offerings:

Art ABC's Adventure (ages 6-8)

Did you know that art is a language? Come join us as we go for a journey to explore the alphabet of art by diving deeper into the foundational elements such as line, shape, value, color, texture, form, and space. Each week in a small group setting, children will focus on the qualities of a different art element and how it can be used to express their personal ideas, beliefs, and emotions. As a result, each student will be empowered through a range of materials to find their own artistic voice as they put to work their newly learned art vocabulary, including both two- and three-dimensional art activities. Supplies will be provided. Just bring yourself!

Seeing through Artist Eyes (ages 9-11)

Have you ever wanted your art to look more realistic, but you weren’t sure where to begin? There is so much to see in the world around us that it can be overwhelming to know where to start with all the details. Come join us as we learn to see through an artist’s eyes and unpack what to look for (and even what you can ignore) when creating something through careful observation. Each week we will cover useful skills and proven tricks of the trade that artists have used for centuries to create accurate, representational art with a variety of materials. Supplies will be provided. Just bring yourself!

Drawing the Human Form (ages 12-16)

Have you ever wanted to know how to draw people better? What if you could? Join us as we learn how to take the complex human body and deconstruct it proportionally into manageable lines and shapes. We will start with the head and features of the face and then use it as a unit of measurement to draw the rest of the body. Students will practice drawing various facial expressions and body poses in a fun, small, interactive group setting. You are sure to leave with a new perspective and helpful knowledge to draw people more efficiently and confidently. Supplies will be provided. Just bring yourself!
